Be Outdoors is an online family outdoor magazine designed to empower families to get outside. The publication is broken into five sections, Be Ready (how to), Be healthy, Be Jammin (travel), Be Responsible (Enviro) and Be Connected. Be Outdoors will be closely integrated into the Ecommerce Wee Outdoors, an online outdoor retail site for kids 0-8.

Description:
The Managing Editor must have a passion for the getting families outside, and in-depth knowledge of the activities, events, organizations, gear and techniques vital to the pursuit of an outdoor lifestyle. Enthusiastic self-starters can flourish in this position.
Be Outdoors is set to Launch January 2009. Prior to launching the Managing Editor will be responsible for building the content for the various sections and working with a wide range of partners including community members, non-profits, and user base to develop creative, dynamic and attractive coverage of the activities, interests and issues important to getting families outside.
After the Launch the Managing Editor will be responsible, in concert with the Senior Editor, for daily management and maintenance of Be Outdoors and Responsible for executing day-to-day content and assigning, editing and keeping the content fresh and relevant. Additionally, the position will require some advertising sales and contact management of potential advertisers until such time as revenue and work require additional resources. The Managing Editor will not be responsible for advertising layout.
This position requires an understanding of creating and managing online content, maximizing revenue generation through advertising, and an appreciation for the value of social networking elements in the content mix.

Partner with corporate/vendor content suppliers

Develop stream of free- lance content generation

Work with Wee Outdoors to integrate content and commerce functions
Requirements:

Experience writing and editing stories for outdoor/family publications and online entities.

Experience writing stories and conducting enterprise reporting of trips, issues and adventures.

Experience assigning and editing stories from contributing writers & photographers.

Experience in working with outside content suppliers to generate content.

Commitment to high standards of writing and reporting.

Openness to user-generated content, stories, photo submission and blogs.

Significant knowledge and contacts with organizations, brands, events and other key players in the outdoor/family space.

Experience and comfort in working with outside entities to drive content and revenue generation.

Ability to work to deadlines while ensuring high quality content.

This position is a part time position requiring a commitment of an average of 20 hours per week. The position could either be for an independent contractor or employee depending on the individual needs of the chosen candidate. Wages will range between $20 and $30 per hour depending on experience. There is potential for the position to become full-time Post-Launch, although it is not a requirement. The chosen candidate will need to provide his/her own computer and telephone however all pre-approved costs and expenses will be reimbursed.
